Papercutting is one of Chinese traditional folk arts. It has a very long history, which may be dated back to the North Dynasties period (386-581 A.D.).

Papercutting art exists all over China, though regional variations exist. Papercutting is usually used to depict various flowers, Chinese zodiac symbols and other animals, such as the phoenix, dragons, horses, monkeys, snakes, etc. Traditionally, black or red paper is used (red means happiness), though colorful papercuts are slowly gaining acceptance.

Papercuts are normally used for decorating windows, lanterns, mirrors, walls, etc. Papercuts are likely to be seen during Chinese holidays and festivals or when people get married, especially Chinese Spring Festival.

In modern society, papercuts are best presents for your friends and relatives and great collections for people who like folk arts.
