DESCRIPTION:
The Potala Palace on the Red Mountain in Lhasa, Tibet (Xinjiang) occupies an area of 130,000 square metres. It was built in the seventh century and was reconstructed in the 17th century. Through its history of 1300 years it was the residence and office of nine Tibetan kings and ten Dalai Lamas. The whole complex is divided into two parts: the White Palace and the Red Palace. The Potala Palace, the great symbol and museum of Tibetan Buddhist culture contains large quantities of murals, Thangka portraits, Buddhist images and jewels.
