Traditional Chinese theater is a splendid art form, a product of the millennia of development of traditional Chinese culture. Just as ancient Greek tragedies and comedies are inseparable from European cultural history, Sanskrit plays are inseparable from the history of Indian civilization and Noh drama is part and parcel of the origin of Japanese art, traditional Chinese theater is an integral part of Chinese culture. Like any other form of drama, traditional Chinese theater originated in religious rituals at the dawn of human history. However, unlike Greek tragedies and comedies, and Indian Sanskrit plays, which faded away after reaching their height of glory in European and Indian history respectively, traditional Chinese theater developed and evolved continuously, and is still going strong today.
