The plays of the Yuan Dynasty are a highpoint in the history of Chinese literature comparable to the descriptive prose of the Han, the classic poetry of the Tang, and the ci poems of the Song dynasties. These plays, mostly written by poor scholars, present city life in a style popular with the ordinary townspeople of the lime. Therefore, they actually surpass the descriptive prose of Han, the classic poetry of Tang and the ci poems of Song in terms of the breadth and scope of social life they depict.

Fourteen plays are here selected with a variety of themes such as trials, heroic deeds of noble outlaws, romance and history. They will give readers a glimpse into the beatify and arm of representative works by some China's greatest playwrights of eight hundred years ago.
