DESCRIPTION:

Short stories were a newly emerging type of fiction in China's Tang Dynasty (618-907) and an important stage in the development of classical Chinese fiction. These stories came in large numbers and a wide variety of subjects ranging from love between men and women to ghosts and spirits, supernatural events and adventures. Having short space, moving portrayal of events and people and high artistic attainment, they exercised an important influence on the writing of dramas in later generations.

This collection contains "The Dragon King's Daughter," "Story of a Singsong Girl, " "The Story of Yingying" and other 11 stories of the Tang Dynasty, and eight stories of the Song Dynasty (960-12 79), including "The Haunting Legend of the Grand Canal" and "The Story of Li Shishi " -each story preceded by a synopsis and a brief introduction to the author.
