DESCRIPTION:
A Dream of Red Mansions
was written in the mid-18th century. The author, Cao Xueqin, was by nature aloof and haughty, but his outstanding literary talent enabled him to imbue the novel with a deep-going individuality.
A Dream of Red Mansions
was ten years in the making (Cao Xueqin wrote the first 80 cahpters; the last 40 chapters were written by a man named Gao E). As soon as it appeared it became widely popular, and soon went through several printings. It was also not long before it attracted the attention of scholars: To this day, "Redology" thrives as a branch of literary criticism and research.
From the 19th century until our own times,
A Dream of Red Mansions
has been translated into a number of languages, spreading its fame and popularity around the world. The present translation, by China's leading literary translation team of Yang Xianyi and his wife Gladys Yang, is the version most complete and most faithful to the original.
