DESCRIPTION:

Hong Lou Meng or A Dream of Red Mansions is generally considered as the greatest Chinese novel ever written. However, because of its size and scope and host of characters, 975 in all, it presents certain difficulties to foreign readers. Towards the end of the 19th century a British consul in China, Bancroft Joly, embarked on a translation; but his two-volume Dream of the Red Chamber, published in Hong Kong in 1892-93, comprises less than half of the original. A later English translation by Florence and Isabel McHugh, based on the German version by Franz Kuhn, was published by Routledge and Kegan Paul in 1958. Kuhn’s translation of 50 chapters presents about half of the original but carries the story to its end. During the last decade, two new English translation of the novel have appeared. Our version was published by the Foreign Languages Press, Beijing; the other version, The Story of the Stone, translated by Professor David Hawkes of Oxford University and Dr. John Minford, is appearing in five volumes in the Penguin Classics series.

For the reader who find the whole novel daunting, an abridged version should be welcome; so the Foreign Languages Press has arranged with the Commercial Press in Hong Kong to produce this edition. Already in the early thirties one such shortened version translated as Dream of the Red Chamber and adapted by Chi-chen Wang appeared with a preface by Arthur Waley; and a second version of Wang’s was published in 1959 with a preface by Mark Van Doren. Wang’s first version consists of 39 short chapters, his second of 60 short chapters. However, both are more in the nature of an abstract than a translation, while this present version is a faithful abridgement of our complete translation. Those who want to enjoy some of the most moving passages in the original should find this version reliable and satisfactory. The work of abridgement has been able done, and the credit for this should go to the editor of the Commercial Press, while for any faults in the translation we still assume responsibility.
