selected from a vast wealth of source materials, including dictionaries, Chinese classics, works of old and modern literature, newspapers, periodicals, legal documents and daily conversations

Arrangement of Entries
Standard characters in this dictionary are arranged according to their radicals in keeping with Chinese tradition. Each radical is shown in the Redical Table with a page number. Characters with same radical are arranged according to the number of strokes in the ascending order.
Some Chinese characters have more than one pronunciaton, with each pronunciation representing a totally different meaning. Characters of the catergory are listed separatedly.
Entries under each character are arranged according to the order of Pinyin.

Pronunciation Guide
Two kinds of pronunciation guide are adopted in this dictionary. They are Mandarin Phonetic Symbols and Hanyu Pinyin.

English Definitions

If one entry has two or more definitions totally different, they are listed separately and introduced by Arabic numerals in the ascending order with the more popular ones placed first.

To enable non-Chinese speaking readers to savor the beauty of some Chinese proverbs and expressions, this dictionary usually gives a literal translation first and then the inferred meaning after a dash.
