DESCRIPTION:

Spoken Chinese is a textbook compiled for foreigners, oversea Chinese, and foreign students who come to China to learn Chinese. The aim of this textbook is to increase their ability to express themselves in Chinese. Any student who has learned five to six hundred Chinese words and a certain number of basic sentence patterns can make good use of this textbook.

Spoken Chinese is divided into two volumes, 30 lessons in Vol. I and 25 lessons in Vol. II. In the first book most of the texts deal with everyday life, while in the second book most of the texts are about scenic spots and historical sites, Chinese culture and arts, and traditional festivals and the customs of the Chinese people. Systematic grammatical explanations have not been given in the textbook; instead, basic grammar points and frequently used spoken language patterns have been arranged into the texts and exercises in a way designed according to the frequency of usage and the degree of difficulty. it is expected that through practice the students will be able to learn the language easily and finally be able to use the language proficiently.

Each lesson consists of three parts: a text, a new-word list, and exercises. The texts are all written in dialogue form. The sentences in these dialogues are rather short, so that they can be easily read and conveniently used in everyday speaking. Most of the new words are very often used in daily life. There are more than six hundred of words in Vol. I and about eight hundreds in Vol. II (not including proper nouns). The phonetic transcriptions of the vocabulary are fundamentally in accordance with those in the Modern Chinese Dictionary. The exercises are made up in such forms as dialogue, substitution, grouping, recasting, etc. All of the exercises are to be done orally. The students will be able to do them quickly without spending much time thinking them over. At the end of the book there is a vocabulary index and a pattern exercise index all arranged in alphabetical order.

The book was greeted with an enthusiastic reception over nine years at Beijing University and at other universities both in China and abroad. In this edition, the content has been enriched and appropriate revisions have been made in language.
