DESCRIPTION:

A series of comprehensive teaching materials with emphasis on communicative principles. Each text centres around a topic; communication is in the context of a given background; language training is realised through communication; relevant functions and conceptual items are interwoven with communication.

In attempting to assist both language training and the study of the linguistic system, brief introductions to pronunciation and grammar are grouped together to avoid fragmentation. At the same time, the advantages of the structural approach are incorporated in the work, and some pattern drills are included.

The material in Book 1 only uses romanisation to facilitate oral practice and communicative training. However, at the end of each unit there is an 'Introduction to Chinese Characters' in which simple and interesting stories about Chinese characters are told. Students are able to initially understand the way in which Chinese characters are formed, familiarise themselves with strokes and structures and commit a small number of them to memory.

Starting from Book 2, Chinese characters are added to the text in combination with romanisation. Apart from improving their oral competence, students are also learning to read and write Chinese characters: oral and written aspects of the language are gradually integrated.

This teaching material is in 13 units covering a total of 40 lessons. Unit One focuses on pronunciation and includes four lessons. Unit Two to Thirteen include regular texts with three lessons to each unit. Each lesson consists of text, vocabulary, explanatory notes, sentence patterns and exercises.
