Son of Heaven was awarded the Mao Dun Prize for Literature in 1991 and is perhaps the best known amongst the number of highly praised historical novels by Ling Li.

The short tempestuous life of Shunzhi (1638-1661), the first emperor of the Qing dynasty, unfolds against a background of social upheaval as one dynasty crumbles and another struggles to establish itself. Young, volatile, charismatic and obviously brilliant, Shunzhi finds himself hemmed in by his uncle (who has his own designs on the throne) and the Empress Dowager, the mother who dotes on him yet must protect the interest of the Manchus, Shunzhi’s ancestral line.

Tang Jo-Wang, the learned German Jesuit Adam Schall von Bell, a dispenser of Western sciences intent upon capturing an emperor’s soul, throws philosophical obstacles in his path. But it is the young monarch’s unbridled passion for his brother’s wife that launches him on a collision course with his court and shakes his empire to its yet unstable foundations.

Son of Heaven takes his reader within the walls of the Forbidden City where this historical tale is acted out amid scenes of breathtaking pageantry and unspeakable cruelty.
