 DESCRIPTION:
Acupressure therapy has evolved from dianxue, which is a traditional Chinese martial art technique of hitting an opponent at a selected acupoint on the body, so as to momentarily block the flow of blood and energy and cause unconsciousness. Based on the same theory, an acupressure therapist skillfully presses the same acupoint to promote the flow of blood and energy and heal an injury.

The therapy is administered by percussing, pressing and/or massaging selected acupoints and stimulation-lines of the body. It is effective for treating common illnesses and complicated diseases such as cerebral palsy and polio.

In clinical application, the therapy requires no drugs or instruments. It is safe, easy to learn, and can be practiced almost anywhere.

About the Author
Professor Wang Zhaopu, M. D., born in Jingning, Gansu Province, China, 1924, is a chief-physician and professor at the Institute of Orthopedic Traumatology, China Academy of TCM, director of the research department and member of the Institute Expert Committee. He is conversant with orthopedics through an integrated approach of Chinese and Western medicine. He has made outstanding contributions to the modernization of TCM and its dissemination abroad. Professor Wang received the Government Special Allowance award in 1996. He graduated from the Medical College of National Lanzhou University in 195 1, obtained his master degree at the First Moscow Medical College in 1953 and doctor and degree in 1956. Having a solid medical foundation and in-depth understanding of orthopedic theory, he stresses clinical practice and researches intractable diseases using modem scientific methods under the guidance of TCM theory. He is particularly skilled in clinical and theoretical techniques used to treat rheumatic arthritis. From 1983 to 1990, he devoted all his efforts to the study of acupressure therapy. These case studies provided the basis for further research.

He has been invited by the Japanese Association of Massage and Acu-moxibustion Practitioners and Australian-Chinese Friendship Association to deliver lectures on acupressure in Japan and Australia, contributing to the internationalization of TCM.

In 1989 his Clinical and Practical Acupressure Therapy was published by Publishing House of Ancient TCM Works. An English edition of Chinese Acupressure Therapy will be published by Foreign Languages Press in 1999. An English edition of Acupressure Therapy, Point Percussion Treatment of Cerebral Birth Injury, Brain Injury and Stroke was published for worldwide distribution by Churchill Livingstone in England in 1991.
