DESCRIPTION:
To a large extent, Western medicine has become world medicine. With globalization, the majority of the world's sick and diseased have come to rely on chemically - synthesized drugs to effect cures. Yet despite the advancement of Western medical science, drugs sometimes fail to work, and many of them induce side effects.
Yet the majority of China's 1.2 billion population still use Zhongyi, or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), for solutions to health problems. With a 5,000-year-long history, the practice offers natural, safe but nonetheless effective therapies and cures for many diseases. On this basis - unparalleled history and sheer number of benefactors - TCM can claim to be Eastern medicine.
TCM differs in a fundamental way from Western medicine, but there is an overlap, where East meets West. Many contemporary TCM practitioners have actually undergone training in Western medicine. And one area where the two schools are similar is in their quests for progress. TCM is, by definition, traditional, but that in no way prevents it from evolving.
Some of the latest TCM breakthroughs are introduced in this book UNBELIEVABLE CURES & MEDICINES FROM CHINA.
The entirely new practice of acupotomy, for example, uses an instrument which is part acupuncture needle, part surgical scalpel. Practitioners across China are using the needle-scalpel daily to treat at least 10,000 patients suffering from musculoskeletal complaints. Variations on standard acupuncture are also a prominent revival-cum- needles of various shape and size which fell into disuse are once again being used in improved forms, and now, administered with heat or magnetism, are proving their worth in the tenement of hosts of traumatic injuries and internal maladies. Meanwhile, ingredients which may seem quite strange to foreigners - ants, snake venom and the root sap of toxic plants - form active components in medicines which cure arthritis, cerebrovascular diseases and epilepsy.
However, ingredients are not the only part of TCM to baffle foreigners. The Chinese system is fundamentally different from Western medicine in its approach: TCM theory hinges on the concept of wholism, stressing the overall, delicate harmony and coordination among different parts of the human body, and the careful readjustment and maintenance of this natural balance. For this reason, an introductory chapter is included to define and explain the principle theories behind TCM.
Ignorance notwithstanding, there are other reasons why much of the world should have remained mystified by TCM: secrecy has long surrounded the preparation of many traditional Chinese medicines, imperial courts of past dynasties shunned their empires' participation in foreign trade, political upheavals induced further isolation and most of all, the language barrier has always hindered the free and easy exchange of information.
It is through a desire to promote a better understanding of TCM that this book has been published.
Of course, what is presented here is but a page from a vast library. Yet the book provides an opportunity for foreigners to glean a better understanding of some TCM treatments being used and practiced in the mid-1990s. And for the convenience of those in the medical profession, medical students, patients and their relatives interested in following up on particular treatments, contact information has been listed in an appendix.
Written by journalists with no medical training themselves, the book is easy reading despite its many medical concepts, conditions and treatments. Writers and editors hope it serves to evidence TCM's suitability as an effective alternative to Western medicine for certain diseases, and in the process help people recover from illnesses and live healthier lives.
