The Biographies of the Dalai Lamas, written by Mr. Ya Hanzhang on the basis of several decades of research, is a treatise on the lives of the Dalai Lamas and what they achieved as leaders of Tibet.

The Dalai and the Panchen are the two religious leaders of the Lamaism found in China's Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (Tibetan Buddhism) with substantial political power. The leaders in these two positions, especially the Dalai Lama, have long played an extremely important role in Tibet's political and economic development.

With the help of volumes of historical documents and reference materials in Tibetan, the author of the book makes a fairly thorough study of the successive Dalai Lamas. The book also contains the author's sometimes brief, sometimes detailed comments on the policies of the Tibetan ruling classes down through Chinese history, as well as providing information on Tibet's political and religious systems, social customs and general political and economic development. In addition, accounts of the propagation of Buddhism in Tibet and descriptions of the religious rituals practised in Tibet are included.
