Singing About the Beautiful Legend of China.

  • Red Plum Blossom Capriccio
    This is a single-movement Erhu concerto. The Erhu is a two-stringed Chinese fiddle. The capriccio is based on a song called Ode to Red Plum Blossom. It is divided into the following sections: Introduction: It begins with a forceful phrase. Then the music is in Sanban style(unrestricted styled when used in music). It? easy for you to associates the music with warm sunshine in severe winter.

    Section I: Moderato grazioso. Its melody is beautiful, moving and full of wonderful hope.
    Section II: Allegretto vivace. It has vigorous rhythm and symbolizes youthful spirit and enthusiasm.
    Section III: After the spirited Sanban style music, it? lento. The melody is very touching, as if someone is missing his or her family members far away.
    Section IV: It suddenly turns into allegro and conveys the spirit of forging ahead fearlessly.
    Section V: It? the end of the capriccio. The grand and slow music represents the noble character of the plum blossoms in defiance of severe cold, as described in the lyrics of the song Ode to the Red Plum Blossom, Red Plum Blossoms are blooming radiantly. Thousands of plum blossoms burst into bloom, sending forth delightful fragrance far and wide. Hundred of various flowers are thus awakened, celebrating the coming of a new spring.

    This piece consists of introduction and three passages. The introduction is full of power and grandeur. The first passage is allegretto. Composer Shi Lemeng used a melody of a local opera of Hunan Province. The music has happy and relaxed mood and strong local flavour. The second passage is lento. Its melody is beautiful, mild and passionate. The third passage includes variations and developments of the first passage. The mood is more merry. The music ends in the climax of joy. It seems that this musical work leads you to the Xingjiang River, where you can enjoy the magnificent scenery and the scenes of the happy life of the people living by both the banks.

    This piece of music expresses the sad and miserable life of the ancient woment in the feudal court. Teaching at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing arts, Whag Guotong was graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in China and received training from Chen Zhenfeng and Jiang Fengzhi, who were the direct students of the renowned ethnomusicologist, Liu Tianhua. At the beginning of the sixties, Wang did some innovations in playing erhu and rose to fame by successfully performing Capriccio of Sanmen Gorge and Ballad of North Hena. His success was considered as a milestone in the history of erhu performance. Wang has toured to over twenty countries in Southeast Asia, western Europe and South America and received great acclaim.

    The introductory section of the music is dynamic, just like the sough of the wind in the pines. The first and the third sections are symmetrical connected and the second section shifts from slow to fast and turns from weak to strong. As the rhythm is lilting and full of changed, the four sections of the song are linked up easily and evenly. Besides, the superb craftsmanship of the performer makes the music freely expressive. The audience will be touched by the music of depicting the firm pines, which symbolize the unyielding character of the righteous composer Erhu soloist, Tian Zaili is a lecturer of the Central Conservatory of Music, China. He was honoured the Bronze Award of the Beijing Television Folk Music Competition. He has visited Britain and Hong Kong for performances and received great acclaim

  • Birds Singing in a Deserted Mountain

    Birds Singing in a Deserted Mountain was first drafted in 1918 and finalized in 1928. Its title comes from a poem written by Wang Wei, a great Chinese poet of the Tang Dynast (618-907). This song is magnificently conceived. The sound of erhu imitates the birds?singing and it induces the audience to enjoy the beauty of the song. Tian Zaili has received the second class award of the erhu solo category in the National Folk Music Competition.
  • Three Trasure Buddha

    This piece of music is divided into two parts. The first part shows a tranquil situation of praying. The second part expresses the sentiment of relaxation and happiness. These two parts are naturally integrated in the performance.
