    This piece of music expresses the composer’s miserable life by portraying the scenery of the moonlight by a stream. Professor Wang Guotong is a renowned composer and Erhu instrumentalist. He is very exquisite and skilful in playing Erhu and his Performance is always moving and attractive.

It is originally a dizi Song of the Jin Dynasty (265-420) and a musician arranged it to a guqin song in The Tang Dynasty by which has been prevailing for generations. In an ensemble Of Guqin and Xiao, the song is more graceful and lively.

    It was originally a pipa song named Flute and Drum at Sunset. The music score was in the manuscript of Wu Wangqing, a native of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China, in 1875. In 1925, Liu Yaozhang of Shanghai adapted it to an ensemble of folk song and Zheng Guanwen named it Moonlit River in Spring. The structure of the song is exquisite; the Melody is lucid and graveful; the rhythm is smooth and varied; the orchestration is Delicate; and the flawiess performance is both lilting and mysterious. The charming Scenery of flute and drum at sunset and the moon on the river with small boats are Melted in the music.

The melody is very touching, as if someone is missing his or her family members far away. Section IV: It suddenly turns into allegro and coveys the spirit of forging ahead fearlessly. Section V: It’s the end of the capriccio. The grand and slow music represents the noble character of the plum blossoms in defiance of severe cold, as described in the lyrics of the song “Ode to the Red Plum Blossom”, “Red Plum Blossoms are blooming radiantly. Thousands of plum blossoms burst into bloom, sending forth delightful fragrance far and wide. Hundred of various flowers are thus awakened, celebrating the coming of a new spring.
  • Sanmen Gorge Capriccio

    With passionate and lively melodies, the piece portray several scenes of the construction of the Sanmen Gorge Reservoir at the Yellow River. It describes the busy but happy life of the constructors, their optimistic and straightforward character and their splendid fancies of future. Following the format of rondon in western music, the composer has written an allegro as the major part, which has a lively dancing thythm. The theme is repeated several times with some lyrical passages in between so as to create contrasts in the development of music.
