  • Go Passing West
    North-west Folk Song
In the past, there was o local saying-the Yellow River curves along Baode Division, nine years out of ten suffer crop failures-which told that the Yellow River kept on bringing disasters to the local inhabitants. In disaster years, poor peasants living in Shanxi and Shanxi were forced to leave their home for the bend of inner Mongolia to make a living. Since they had to cross the trategic pass of Great Wall, they were said to ‘go passing west.’ The melody describes the sad scene of dear ones reluctant to part at the occasion
  • The White-haired Girl
    Music: Ma Ke
Opera the White-haired Girl is familiar to every family in China. This melody is derived from ‘A North Wind Blows’ and ‘Tie a red Ribbon’ of the opera. The first period expresses the waiting of Xi Er, daughter of poor peasant Yang Bailo who hides away from debt to return for the New Year at New Year’s Eve. Fine and touching, the melody depicts a pure and lovely image of Xi Er. The second period describes Yang Bailao giving his daughter a piece of red ribbon to tie her hair as a New Year present, which he just bought with the money he earned after selling his beancurds. The cheerful melody, lively rhythm and the echo of the banhu with cello describe a joyous atmosphere of their meeting. The third period is reframe of the first, lyrical and serene, as if immersed in the expectation of happy life.

  • Feng Huang Taishang Yi Chiuxiao
A Song Ci ----- to the melody FENGHUANGE TAISHANG YI CHUIXIAO
Lyrics by Li Qingzhao, Song Dynast(960-1279)

By the red-silk bed clothes the burning perfume in the golden pierced container having gone out, I get up but feel too weary to make my toilet. Heedless of the dusty dressing table. And even the sunlight falling on the curtain-hook. Laden with parting woe, I keep countless cares in my heart. Have I become thinner lately? Ah, it is nothing to do with the effect of wine or gloom over the desolate autumn. He has gone at last. I would rather sing a thousand times the Yangguan Melody to make him stay! Now, I can’t bear to think of him far, far away, Especially living along in such a lonely chamber! Perhaps only the murmuring stream could see why I gaze far into the place everyday with additional yearning and care!
