In a moutainous village school, Mr Gao, the only teacher, is t see his sick mother and so Wei Mingzhi, a 13-year old girl who is alos a primary school graduate, is asked to take over the classes during his absence. Before leaving for home, Mr Gao tells Wei again and again to take good care of the pupils, not one less until he returns. Wei can teach nothing but ask the pupils to copy the texts. She keeps Mr. Gao's words in mind and calls the roll every day. No pupil is allowed to quit school But one day, a ten year old boy is absent from school. It turns out that he ahs left for the town to do manual work because his family can not pay their debt. Wei gets Zhang's address from his mother and goes to the town to look for her dear pupil ...
