Chinese Folk Papercut
People in China's vast countryside like to paste pretty paper designs on their doors and windows during festivals. These paper designs, popularly called papercuts and sometimes "window flowers", are a kind of folk art often used to reflect the life of the people. They have a long history and are found in nearly every part of China. The designs usually have a plain and simple composition and lively images, and are very good as ornaments.
Papercuts are made not only by professional craftsmen but by large numbers of amateur art lovers. They create designs of the country's scenic spots and beautiful birds and flowers to symbolize their happy life.
Chinese folk papercuts are made with scissors or knives. Some are dyed after cutting. The products of different locallities have their distinctive artistic styles.
